Hi all

I just found out that my NLS cooperating library, in Cleveland, Ohio, has bought about 500 of those play away books and are lending them out. They have some titles that are not available on tape or on the download site from NLS. I thought I'd just let the U.S. zoners know about this so you can check with the library where you get your books to see if they might also be distributing these books. The machines are very easy to operate, and my first book came with instructions on tape and a Braille list of all the available titles.

Play away books? are those the ones on a digital card?

Yeah. I believe they are. I think you can play them using the Stream. It's kind of a big, complicated process, but I know the books will play.

No, they are not on a card. These books are often sold at airport gift shops for travelers who decide they want A book to listen to on the plane. Each machine has one book preloaded on it. It only has six buttons and is easy to operate. It comes with a set of earphones, or you can use your own. You just listen to the book and then send the machine back.

I saw them today for the very first time at my public library. I thought they looked pretty cool, but no instructions in a format i could use that i found, and a lot of the stuff was stuff i saw on other sites. I am in to contempary authors and such, this stuff sounded really out of date, and i couldnt get the damn battery compartment open. but i have no length to my finger nails. i didnt check one out, i didnt like the selection get some sci fi and such and i might.

I have tried them and I like them very much. Now they need to come up with a machine that can be loaded with more than one book, and that you can add and delete as many books as you want.

That would be called a Victor Stream or a BookSense or one of the mainstream gadgets such as iPods or other MP3 players. The playaway machines are designed just for one book because you can borrow them from libraries, buy them at airport gift shops to read on the plain, etc.
